Intel 14th Gen Meteor Lake: Release Date, Specs, Socket, Leaks and Rumors

Intel 14th Gen Meteor Lake: Release Date, Specs, Socket, Leaks and Rumors

The highly-anticipated Intel 14th Gen CPU lineup is on the horizon, and details are beginning to surface. In the latest leak, we gain insights into the core count and clock speeds of the upcoming Raptor Lake refresh range, offering enthusiasts a glimpse of what's to come in the world of computing.

Rumors have been swirling around the flagship model, the Intel Core i9-14900K (possibly branded as the Core 9 Ultra 14900K), and the news is electrifying. This powerhouse is expected to boast a boost clock of up to 6GHz, thanks to Intel Thermal Velocity Boost, a notable improvement over the 5.8GHz clock speed of its predecessor, the Core i9-13900K. Previously, this level of clock speed was only attainable with the limited edition Core i9-13900KS, indicating that this remarkable speed could now be making its way to the top-end mainstream chip.

The latest information, sourced from Benchlife, also sheds light on other chips in the lineup. It confirms a previous rumor that the Core i7-14700K will sport an impressive 20 cores, a significant upgrade over the 16 cores found in the Core i7-13700K. What's more, the leak extends our knowledge of clock speeds, revealing that the Core i7-14700K will feature a Turbo Boost Max Technology 3 (TBMT3) clock speed of 5.6GHz, in addition to the standard 5.5GHz P-Core boost clock. Recent benchmark leaks even suggest the possibility of overclocking this CPU to a jaw-dropping 6GHz.

In contrast, the Core i5-14600K is expected to maintain the same 14 cores as the Core i5-13600K, composed of six P-Cores and eight E-Cores. The primary difference between the two lies in clock speed, with the P-Core boost speed inching up from 5.1GHz to 5.3GHz. Recent leaks, including CPU-Z screenshots, have corroborated these specifications. In our own tests, we managed to overclock the Core i5-13600K to an impressive 5.7GHz, suggesting that there might not be a substantial advantage for overclockers opting for the 14600K if these rumors hold true.

It's worth noting that Intel recently announced its intention to drop the 'i' from its Core branding. Consequently, these CPUs may adopt names such as Core 7 Ultra 14700K and Core 5 Ultra 14600K, in line with Intel's evolving branding strategy.

As we eagerly anticipate the 14th gen release, it's important to keep an eye on the future. The Intel 15th gen Arrow Lake architecture is on the horizon, promising significant performance gains over Raptor Lake.

Additionally, previous information suggests that the Intel 14th gen CPUs will use the LGA1700 socket, offering support for both DDR4 and DDR5 memory. Remarkably, they will even be compatible with older Z690 and B660 motherboards with a BIOS update. If you plan to use a future Intel 14th gen CPU on a 12th or 13th gen motherboard, be sure to consult our comprehensive guide on BIOS flashing for guidance.

Mark your calendars, as the expected release date for the Intel Core i5-14600K, Core i7-14700K, Core i9-14900K, and the entire 14th gen lineup is Thursday, October 19, 2023, based on leaks and historical release patterns.

In the meantime, if you're in the market for a new Intel CPU, don't miss our guide to the best Intel Z790 motherboards, as these boards are likely to support the Intel 14th gen lineup with a BIOS update down the road. And for gamers, be sure to explore our comprehensive guide to the best CPUs for gaming, where we present a range of options to suit various budgets and preferences.

As we eagerly await the arrival of the Core i5-14600K and its counterparts, it's worth remembering that the Core i5-13600K remains a favored choice from Intel's current CPU lineup. With the similarities between the two and its impressive overclocking capabilities, it continues to capture the attention of enthusiasts.
