Is there a motherboard crisis on the horizon?

Is there a motherboard crisis on the horizon?

Tech experts are warning that the PC hardware industry may be heading into a “motherboard crisis,” alongside the ongoing RAM shortage. The problem is being driven largely by the massive demand for AI hardware, which is consuming huge amounts of chips, memory, and manufacturing capacity.

According to reports, motherboard makers are struggling with rising production costs, shortages of important components, and weaker consumer demand because PCs are becoming more expensive overall. Some manufacturers are even cutting back production of cheaper motherboards to focus on higher-profit premium products.

This could mean fewer affordable motherboard options for PC gamers, higher prices, and longer wait times for certain models. Industry analysts believe the situation may continue for several years because AI companies are buying up much of the global chip supply.

In simple terms: building or upgrading a PC could soon become much more expensive — not just because of RAM prices, but because motherboard manufacturers are now facing similar supply and cost pressures too.

The good news

While reports are warning of a potential “motherboard crisis” in the PC industry, here at Direct Computers we’re not currently seeing any major impact at consumer level. One of the main reasons is the wide variety of motherboard brands and suppliers available on the market.

Unlike some hardware categories that rely heavily on a small number of manufacturers, motherboards are produced by several major brands including ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, ASRock and others. This gives retailers and system builders more flexibility when sourcing stock, helping avoid major shortages for everyday customers.

Although prices on some premium or high-end models may fluctuate due to global component demand and AI-driven manufacturing pressures, the average consumer looking to build or upgrade a PC still has plenty of options available across different price points.

At the moment, supply remains stable enough that most customers are unlikely to notice significant availability issues when shopping for a new motherboard.
