Good News for Windows 10 Users: Microsoft Quietly Gives More Time for Security Updates

If you're still using Windows 10, there's some good news.

Microsoft has quietly decided to keep offering security updates for Windows 10 users for another year. The company didn't make a big announcement – it simply updated a support page on its website.

What happened?

Official support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Normally, this means Microsoft no longer provides regular security fixes and updates.

However, Microsoft offered an extra year of security updates for home users who were willing to pay $30 (about £22). Now, the company has extended that offer by another year. People will be able to sign up for these paid security updates until October 12, 2027.

Why is Microsoft doing this?

The simple answer: a lot of people still use Windows 10.

Millions of computers around the world are still running the older operating system. Many users have not upgraded because their PCs work perfectly well and don't meet the requirements for Windows 11.

Windows 11 needs newer hardware, including special security features and enough memory and storage. For some people, upgrading means buying an entirely new computer.

Do you need to panic if you're using Windows 10?

No.

If your computer still runs Windows 10, it won't suddenly stop working. The main concern is security. Over time, newly discovered security flaws won't be fixed unless you receive extended security updates.

For many people, this extra year gives them more time to decide whether to:

  • Pay for the additional security updates.
  • Upgrade to Windows 11 if their computer supports it.
  • Buy a new computer in the future.
  • Continue using their current PC while planning their next step.

The bottom line

Microsoft appears to recognise that many people aren't ready to leave Windows 10 behind. Instead of forcing everyone to move immediately, it has quietly given users more time.

If you're happy with your Windows 10 computer, this extension means you don't have to rush into buying a new PC just yet. But it's still a good idea to start thinking about your long-term plans, because Windows 10's days are eventually coming to an end.
